Epic Grill Silogs

Don't you love it when you stumble upon a restaurant that turns out to have amazing, authentic food, and wonderful, friendly owners and staff? That happened to us when we made the trek out to Epic Grill Silogs in New Westminster a few weeks ago. I had seen a handful of people post photos of their Filipino breakfast from this small, newly opened place and I just had to try. I LOVE Filipino food and we always make an effort to try out new places.

So for those of you who haven't tried Filipino food, or don't know what "silog" is (like I didn't), it's actually a word made up of "SI" (short for "sinanag" or fried/garlic rice) and "LOG" (short for "itlog" - Filipino for egg). Silogs are usually served with the rice spread over the plate with a couple of eggs on top along with a meat of some sort. Epic Grill has a bunch of Silog options (13 options in total!) but we went for the Tap Silog (beef) and To-Silog (pork "longganisa").

If Silog isn't your thing, they also offer Canadian style breakfast options - bacon, eggs, potatoes with pancakes or toast - which is what my kids had.  I didn't take any photos as I was too excited to eat my meal while it was still hot (not a true foodie, I guess...lol)

The restaurant is run by the owners and their two sons and we learned that they are originally from BC, but spent some time running a restaurant in Winnipeg (where my hubby is from).  They also ran a catering business for MLA's up in Yellowknife. I can't blame them at all for returning from the cold and coming back to BC!

We had a great chat with them about their menu. All their food is served fresh off the grill and much of it is hand made. They make their own longganisa which is one of my favs! Yes! HOMEMADE LONGGANISA!! That is what I love about this place, the owner takes pride in giving you a authentic, affordable home cooked meal without any frills.

Even though we were pretty stuffed, we couldn't turn down dessert. We were offered a slice of their Matcha Pistachio Sansrival Cake. It's made with layers of merengue, buttercream and cashews.   Oh man was it GOOD (do i dare say, their desserts are better than my Filipino MIL...shh).  I didn't get a photo but it's definitely a dessert I would order again, again and again.  I mentioned to them that I love everything UBE and would be back to try their UBE dessert next time. And as I was leaving they gifted me what I thought was an UBE sponge cake.  When I got home and took the cake out of the tray, it was actually an UBE Leche Flan Cake.  OMG, this dessert was amazing!!  What can be better than a combination of two of my favourite Filipino desserts - UBE and LECHE FLAN!!  Brilliant!!!!

(these photos does not do this cake justice)

We were invited to come back to try some other Silogs, so I'm planning a visit in the next week or so. It's a shame that they aren't open for dinner, but they told us they are concentrating on the Silogs for now - although they do have some a la carte items like Sinigang on the menu if you're craving for it!  So stay tuned for more yummy pics.  But in the meantime check them out (info below)!
