Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Center

Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Center

The NK’Mip Desert Cultural Centre is one of Okanagan’s top family tourist attractions. Here, you will discover fascinating stories of Canada’s only desert. You will learn about the history and culture of the Sylix people of the Okangan nation, about their land, legend and people.

During my recent trip to Osoyoos, I had the opportunity to visit the cultural center with my family. The impressive state-of-the-art interpretive centre offers so much to see, learn and experience. Explore the indoor and outdoor exhibits, 2 multi sensory theatres, trails, and learn about the deserts ecology and wildlife of the area.

Here are a few highlights from our visit.

I loved the outdoor pathway and walking trails here. Along the path there were displays showing how plants were used by the Sylix people for food, medicine and technology.

The walk was beautiful and tranquil, and the path lead to a reconstructed traditional village where you could peek inside the daily life of the Okanagan people. Be sure to bring your camera.

My kids got a kick out of getting up close and personal with the Western Rattlesnake in the “Living Land” display and “Critter Corner”. They were quite interested in learning about the desert wildlife.

In the Inkameep Day school Exhibit, we explored a collection of art done by students aged six to sixteen at a school on the reserve in the 1930s.

We had a fun time visiting the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Center. It was educational and interesting. We could have easily spent a lot more time here. Be sure to give yourself at least 2 hrs if you plan to fully explore the walking trail.
